Goodbye from Phoenix!!

It was a great tournament here in Phoenix with great soccer, great weather and great people to work with this year.

Thank you to all of you who participated in the tournament, worked the tournament, helped at the tournament and followed the blog. It was a great experience and we look forward to helping again in the future.

The blogger is already looking forward to the 2010 NCCS National Soccer Championships to be held in his home state of Texas.

We will hopefully see everyone again in Frisco, Texas next year.

Cornell/Virginia Tech Tie break Women's Championship

According to Tie breaking Procedure 7:

"If a tie still exists...NCAA Penalty Kick Procedures will be taken fifteen (15) minutes prior to the scheduled start of the appropriate Quarterfinal or Semifinal game."

This would place Cornell & Virginia Tech on Field 6 at 9:45am for the Penalty Kick Tie Break.

The winner would stay to play Michigan at 10am on Field 6.

The loser would play Florida in the consolation bracket at 4pm on Field 1.

Quiet Before the Storm

It is a beautiful cool night in Phoenix. Teams have practiced today or arrived and are ready to compete for a championship beginning tomorrow.

Tomorrow the action begins with games at 8am.

Tomorrow the blog will update games as they become finals. We will give you as much information as we can throughout the day.

Men's Championship Synopsis

With Indiana University absent this year, there will be a new national champion to crown. So what teams are here to compete?

Region 1 qualifiers include: Penn State (08 national QF), Johns Hopkins (08 consolaton semi) and Delaware (DNP-Did Not Participate). An at-large berth went to the US Naval Academy (Navy-DNP).

Region 2 qualifiers include: Georgia (08 open participant), Florida (08 national QF) and North Carolina (08 round of 16). An at-large berth went to 08 round of 16 participant Virginia.

Region 3 qualifiers include: Ohio State (08 national semifinalist), Wisconsin-Milwaukee (08 national QF) and Michigan (DNP). An at-large berth went to Illinois (DNP) and Michigan State (08 round of 16).

Region 4 qualifiers include: Texas A&M (08 round of 16), Texas State (08 round of 16) and Missouri (08 round of 16).

Region 5 qualifiers include: Minnesota (08 round of 16), Colorado (08 national QF) and Colorado State (08 NATIONAL FINALIST).

Region 6 qualifiers include: UCSB (08 round of 16), Arizona State (DNP) and Weber State (DNP). At-large berths went to: Cal Poly (DNP) and 08 open champion California-Berkley.

A new men's field for 09 will crown a new champion. Who will it be? Can Colorado State make a return trip to the finals or will 07 national champion UCSB return to form?

It all begins on Thursday!!!

Women's Championship Synopsis

UCSB...the tournament starts and ends with them. They are the 2 time defending national champions. They are coming in this year though as an at-large bid into the championship division. What other teams are here to challenge UCSB?

Let's begin with 2008 national finalist Arizona. They are one of 3 teams that automatically qualified from Region 6. The other teams from Region 6 include: Cal Poly and 2008 open champion UCLA.

What do the other regions have to offer?

Region 1 qualifiers include: Penn State (national semifinalist), Cornell (2008 participant) and Delaware (DNP-Did Not Participate). The College of New Jersey (DNP) qualified from Region 1 as an at large.

Men's Open Tournament Synopsis

Like the women, men's 2008 open champion Cal-Berkley will compete in the championship division which means a new open champion will be crowned for 2009. Let's take a look at how each team fared at the 2008 NCCS championships.

Open playoff participants last year included: San Diego State (QF), Villanova (QF), Kansas (Semi) and Virginia Tech (Semi).

2008 open participants last year included: Iowa State, James Madison and Towson.

Teams that did not participate in either tournament include: Texas, Colorado "Black", California-Irvine, Connecticut, East Carolina and Wichita State.

2008 championship divison participants included: UCLA (consolation QF), Arizona (consolation winner) and national semifinalist USC.

Will USC "Fight On?" Will Texas "Hook 'Em?" Or will the blogger run out of puns?

Women's Open Tournament Synopsis

With 2008 Open Champion UCLA now competing this year in the championship division we will take a look at this year's open field to see how each team fared last year at the NCCS championships.

James Madison and California-Berkley return from last year's open tournament to compete again. They both reached the semifinals in the open tourney in 08.

Other open tourney playoff contenders from last year include: Middle Tennessee State, Towson and Villanova.

Teams that did not qualify for the playoff but competed in open last year include: Colorado State "Green", Iowa State, Colorado "Black" and Miami (FL).

Newcomers for this year that did not particpate in either tournament last year include: Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Oregon, Vermont, USAFA Prep School and Vanderbilt.

Boston College enters this year's open tourney having competed in the championship tournament in 08.

Finally 2008 National Quarterfinalist and 2007 National Finalst, San Diego State, will compete in the open tournament this year.

Will SDSU's tourney experience help them out or will a new team claim the open title???
